Hello, Courageous Human.
Yes, I’m talking to you, brave soul.
Getting personal with me so soon? Quite forward of you… 😉
My name is Josh Barad, I’m the Founder and CUO (Chief Uncomfortable Officer) here.
Our mission at In The Middle Seat is to support mission-driven millennials in creating the IMPACT that they want to see in the world.
ITMS is here to INSPIRE and SUPPORT peeps like you in making their own meaningful dent in the universe.
(Me-ta-phor): The place on an aircraft that tends to be the most uncomfortable. An invisible line of personal space that you’re not so comfortable crossing–invading the bread of your travel sandwich from either side. In the moments of uncertainty, it’s a place of vulnerability and potential rejection.
That is why we must sit here. In conflict with our desires, we must fight for this seat, which will help to slowly strip away each insecurity of personal carry-on baggage. It’s the space where we must let go of our fears of discomfort, shame, rejection, and judgements, while realizing that passengers on either side desperately crave our authenticity. This seat becomes the space where certainty comes from knowing you’re comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Because, frankly the seat in the middle gets a bad rap.
I mean, who actually WANTS to sit there?
Well this guy does and several hundred others who’ve joined forces to create this epic community.
For me, the turning point and creation of ITMS happened when I decided to face my deepest fears and booked a one-way ticket to Thailand in early 2013.
That journey lasted 108-days, but many of the lessons from that experience will stay with me forever. The trip completely reshaped how I view the world.
During the four-month adventure, I realized something so simple:
Getting Uncomfortable = An Awesome Life
I launched In The Middle Seat out of an insane desire to inspire others to take action towards creating a meaningful life.
We’ve created a community where talking about our deepest insecurities are not only welcomed; they’re encouraged. At ITMS, we playfully challenge the many issues that face our generation. They involve our greatest fears, behaviors, and attitudes that rarely get spoken about, and are preventing us from reaching our greatest potential.
I’m so honored that the powers of the internet universe have brought us together within an online community that values courage and super duper REAL conversations.
While I know it’s socially acceptable to wait three days, we don’t play by society’s rules. I’d love to hear from you now!
Send me a tweet @JoshuaBarad and let me know that you’ve inter-stalked me and inspired to #letsgetuncomfortable. Also, feel free to add me on Facebook as I tend to drop lots of thought-provoking magic (atleast, that’s what I’m told).

Who Is This Dude?
I’m a human, just like you and an avid student of life.
I believe that the best way to LEARN is through [transformative] experience.
I know that each one of us, including me + you [yes, YOU] have a unique talent and gift to give to the world.
This, however, wasn’t always the case.
Lets just say confusion (not to be mistaken for Confucius) played a large role in my life (still does, shhh ;p).
From a very young age, I thought I wanted to become CEO/Investment Banker of sorts. Maybe I could pretend to enjoy wearing layered suits, tucked in shirts, and talk about stuff I don’t like?
I’m good with numbers, so naturally, working on Wall Street was what success looked like in my mind. Just after finishing college, I started my glorified corporate-bank-analyst-career and almost quit on day one. That evening I began Googling around to figure out the W-T-F behind the questions of L-I-F-E.
I began to immerse myself with wisdom from some pretty wide humans dating back to even before my parents were born (that’s old…) and other thought leaders from more recent years. Within this literature and plenty of experimental [failing] learning, I started to see that there could be more to life than living according to the way that we’re conditioned. I was onto something…
The cubicle where I felt trapped, and the happy hours of buzzed conversation were suffocating my existence. Instead of continuing on my projected path of cubicle notoriety, I made a conscious decision to rework myself from the inside out. I hired a coach who helped me get super clear on what was ACTUALLY important to me, what I truly valued, and how could I live a life filled with alot more of that (instead of TPS reports).
A year later, I quit that job and set on one of the most rewarding and exhilarating journeys of my life (that I’m still on) which eventually involved scaring myself into world traveling, speaking, writing, and coaching on how we create a deeper sense of freedom and fulfillment in our lives.
While I certainly don’t have “it all figured out,” I do know this: A greater sense of purpose, meaning, and happiness is found within the uncomfortable moments of our lives.
I’m currently soaking up space and sun in Chiang Mai, Thailand, but by the time you read this I might be in Portland for World Domination Summit, Florida for some family time [cue the cheesy family picture], or back to Asia to lead my first LIVE retreat.
When I’m not in airports or looking for other middle seats to sit in, I’m usually jamming out to some terribly 90’s pop music (that I thoroughly enjoy, writing/talking/coaching about _________ (insert word related to life, passion, shit scaring yourself, health, & smiling), and avoiding tomatoes.
